Soup-Run
We operate a soup-run on a Tuesday night between 10.00pm and midnight in Leeds City Centre.  The soup-run provides soup, bread, tea and blankets.  Our aim is to offer not only food and blankets but also a welcoming and safe environment for those who use the soup-run.  It is a place where we can meet those new to the streets and try and offer some practical support, and where we can access our longer-term difficult to reach service users.

We are looking for people to commit to the soup-run, on a Tuesday from 8:30pm until midnight.
Street Outreach Work
Volunteers go out (with a support worker or a very experienced volunteer) during the day and in the evening, getting to know individuals on the street, building trust. Outreach work involves practical support too, like referring someone to a hostel, accompanying another to a doctor’s appointment or hospital, taking someone for a meal in a cafe, or distributing blankets. Often people just want someone to listen to them; we encourage people to talk about their day, about their fears and troubles, about their anger, and about their hopes.

We are looking for people who commit to 2 or 3 hours outreach work every week.
A large proportion of the people we support have issues with drugs and/or alcohol.  They tend to be at the more chaotic end of substance use.

· There were
40,872 admissions to hospital in England in the year 2006-7 with a primary diagnosis of mental and behavioral disorders due to alcohol consumption
·  There were
6,743 admissions to hospital in England in the year 2005-6 with a primary diagnosis of drug related mental health and behavioral disorder.
· The total number of drug related deaths in England and Wales in 2006 was
1,573
· The total number of deaths directly linked to alcohol in England in 2006 was
6,517.  The Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy for England estimates there are up to 22,000 premature deaths per year associated in some way with alcohol misuse.

All information taken from the NHS Information Centre.

Substance use can start as a coping mechanism.  We know that behind the issue is a person, and we aim to give them the support to access the right services
