Homelessness is a very real problem, and one that’s on the rise across the UK. From relationship breakdowns and the cost of living crisis, to the very real issues surrounding housing and no-fault evictions, it’s becoming ever more apparent that homelessness does not discriminate. It could happen to any one of us, at any time

With this in mind, we’ve put together a list of helpful resources, advice and support, to help you through any worries you might have about your financial future. There’s no need to worry alone - take a look.

Housing advice

If you’re in need of housing advice, the homelessness charity Shelter works across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. With an emergency helpline for people in crisis and a webchat service for those looking for quick advice, Shelter can provide you with information on eviction, rent arrears, council housing and repairs.

If you have a mortgage and you’re struggling with your monthly payments, you should always contact your lender in the first instance. Whilst that can feel like a scary step, many lenders have dedicated support teams that can help. They’ll talk through all of the options available, including a mortgage payment holiday or a more manageable payment plan if appropriate. It’s very important that you don’t worry alone and let any missed payments build up - always seek advice.

Money

Bills

As with mortgage payments, if you’re falling behind on your utility bills, it’s best to address the issue straight away and talk to someone for support. Whilst it’s a worrying place to be, you’re most certainly not alone. Contact your suppliers as soon as you can, and they’ll work with you to try and find a solution that works for you and your circumstances.

A few top tips for efficiently heating your home

According to recent research from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, over three million low-income households in the UK can’t afford to heat their homes. If you’re trying to navigate this issue, here are some top tips from the Energy Saving Trust for how to keep warm in the colder months:

  • Radiators: ensure you bleed your radiators so they can heat up to their full potential. Placing tin foil behind them will also reflect more heat back into the room, instead of it absorbing into the walls.
  • Extra layers and hot water bottles: these are the easiest and cheapest ways to stay warm this winter.
  • Thermal curtains: you can invest in these from £12, in places such as Argos. Compared to standard curtains, keeping them closed will help trap more of the warmth.

Debt

As the cost of living crisis continues, it’s all too easy to rely on credit cards or other means of borrowing to make ends meet. If possible, try to avoid pay-day loans, as high-cost credit can put you in even deeper financial trouble which in many cases, can be avoided.

If you visit https://www.gov.uk/options-for-paying-off-your-debts, you’ll find lots of helpful advice about how to manage debt, and the various options available to you. The Money Saving Expert also provides a great overview for what to do if you’re struggling to pay your bills, along with in-depth advice.

Benefits

If you’re struggling financially, it’s never a bad idea to look at what benefits or financial relief might be available. Online benefit calculators can give you a good idea of whether you’re entitled to any benefits based on your income and circumstances.

However, if you’re struggling to navigate things, or you’re unsure about where to start, contact your local Citizens Advice Bureau, as their advisors should be able to assist.

Food banks

In recent years and months, the number of people and families relying on food banks has increased significantly, and there’s also a wider section of society becoming dependent on them because they simply can’t afford the basics.

If this is resonating with you, the Citizens Advice Bureau has lots of helpful information on how to access a food bank here
